Movie Review: Fifty Shades of Black

An inexperienced college student meets a wealthy businessman whose sexual practices put a strain on their relationship.

Fifty Shades of Grey was a popular book, which of course meant at some point, it was going to be a film. That it did, last year. Unfortunately, the film did not meet readers expectations that was set from the book. Apparently, that doesn’t matter, as they are making a sequel, Fifty Shades Darker, set to be released in 2017. Until then, we are fortunate enough to get some laughs with a parody, Fifty Shades of Black. Or so I thought. Of course most of you could’ve guessed that Fifty Shades of Black was going to be bad. It’s almost an automatic, safe assumption when it comes to parodies now. However, I tend to keep my mind open. I mean, I like Marlon Wayans. I did enjoy A Haunted House, but A Haunted House 2 was only okay. So, I decided to give this film a chance.

Unfortunately, I barely laughed. Now, to be fair, I never saw Fifty Shades of Grey. So, I may have laughed a little bit more if I had seen the film before seeing Fifty Shades of Black. But, it still wouldn’t have saved this film. I truly feel I could’ve written a better script. Marlon Wayans had very few funny moments and Kali Hawk was awkward and felt like she was trying too hard. There are a few nudity and racist scenes, so if you’re offended easily, you’ll definitely want to skip this film.

There’s not much else to say here other than, don’t waste your time. You’ve been warned.
