Movie Review: Dirty Grandpa

Right before his wedding, an uptight guy is tricked into driving his grandfather, a perverted former Army general, to Florida for spring break.

For those of you who read my post on the Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising trailer, you’ll know I’m a pretty big Zac Efron fan ever since he did Neighbors. For those of you who didn’t read that post, well, now you know why. Naturally, when I first heard about Dirty Grandpa, I was ecstatic. Then I found out it was going to be rated R and I couldn’t contain myself. Okay, I exaggerate. Did Dirty Grandpa meet or exceed my expectations? Well, it met them.

Dirty Grandpa certainly has its moments, but it’s definitely not for everyone. It’s full of one-liners that you and your buddies would riff off when talking trash to each other, but it’s also crude, offensive and a tad racist. So, if that’s your thing, you’ll love Dirty Grandpa. Now, that doesn’t mean you’re crude, offensive and racist. Not at all. It’s debatable, depending who you talk to, but there’s nothing wrong with enjoying a film like that.

If you’ve seen Neighbors, you would think Zac Efron was the one pulling out all the one liners and being all crude and offensive, and while he dabbles a bit into each, it’s actually Robert De Niro who steals the show. I mean, go figure, the film is called Dirty Grandpa. I still expected more from Efron, but boy oh boy do you see De Niro in a new light. Never have I seen him act the way he does in Dirty Grandpa and it is fantastic. Julianne Hough has a very minor role in the film, which is unfortunate, but Aubrey Plaza made up for it for being a total bat shit crazy, horny girl. To be honest though, I thought she took it a little too far in some scenes. Maybe I’m just not that bat shit crazy. Lastly, if any of you have seen The League, you may recognize Jason Mantzoukas, who played Rafi on the show. Well, he was pretty funny in Dirty Grandpa, but just like in The League, you really only want him in small doses and it was just enough of him in the film.

Overall, Dirty Grandpa gives off plenty of laughs and if you’re not easily offended, you’ll more than likely enjoy the film. Just don’t bring your mother.

Fun fact: The screenplay for this film was featured in the 2011 Blacklist, a list of the “most liked” unmade scripts of the year. Looks like Hollywood is digging back a few years to get some new ideas…
